FAQs

Check out our most frequently asked questions

What level am I?
  • First Timer: You’ve never been on skis or a snowboard before. You’ll be focusing on the basics, and finding your feet. A First Timer Package is recommended.
  • Beginner: You can stop on skis or a snowboard and are ready to work on side-slipping or turning in the Beginner area. You’ll build confidence and skills as you aim to progress to green runs.
  • Learner: You can control your speed and turn both ways on green runs.
  • Intermediate: You’re comfortable skiing or snowboarding on green and blue runs. You’re refining your parallel turns or edge control and are eager to explore different snow conditions and terrain.
  • Advanced: You’re ready to take your skills to the next level. You confidently ski or snowboard all over the mountain, explore off-piste terrain, and are interested in refining these skills or hitting the terrain park.
Do kids need to wear helmets?

We recommend everyone to wear helmets for skiing or snowboarding. Under 12s are required to wear helmets in lessons. There are rentals and retail options available for helmets at Tūroa. Tūroa Academy, Rippers and Mountain Explorers participants are required to wear helmets.

What are the closed day activities?

Depending on the age of the kids, this includes team building and exercise activities in Ohakune, indoors & outside. There may be extra activities that incur a small charge, such as the Vertical Climbing Wall.

What about dietary requirements for supervised lunches?

We can cater for most requirements, just make sure you note this on your booking so we can contact you if required.

Is Tūroa good for beginners?

Absolutely. We’ve got custom packages designed specifically for beginners to help you get started the right way. Check out our First-Timer Packages for the best value to get you – or your family – out on the snow.

Can we watch the kids without skiing ourselves?

Freddie's eatery and the Alpine Café are located at the base and can be easily accessed from the carpark. These cafes have great views over the Alpine Meadow beginners area. .

Will my kids have the same instructor all season?

For the multi-day programmes, we schedule the same instructor for the whole season.

I'm not sure which programme to pick!

We can help you, just contact us at info@pureturoa.nz.

Can my kids bring a packed lunch?

You are welcome to bring a packed lunch with you, however these can only be consumed in the designated areas. Please follow the pack in - pack out rule and take any rubbish back down with you. If you choose a supervised lunch but choose to pack your own, please drop this at the Snow School office. Please note the charge is still the same for the supervision.
