Staying safe at Tūroa
Your safety is our priority at Tūroa! From on-mountain medical care to expert patrollers, we've got the right support in place. Our team is here to help you enjoy the mountain with confidence.
So, let's all do our part: follow the Snow Safety Code, look out for fellow skiers and riders, and gear up with a helmet – especially when you're hitting the terrain parks!
Our Tūroa staff and ski patrol crew are always around to answer safety questions and lend a helping hand when you need it.


Snow Safety Code
We want everyone to have a safe and fun filled day at Tūroa, that’s why we actively promote the Snow Safety Code. We ask that all snow users behave in a safe and respectful manner to keep themselves and other guests safe.

We strongly recommend wearing a helmet when participating in snowsport activities at Tūroa. Not only will it protect your head, but it will keep it warm, too. Come and check out the on-mountain retail store for a wide selection of helmets and other items.
Hazards at Tūroa
Alpine Conditions
Weather conditions on Mt Ruapehu can vary and change quickly – so please be prepared and dress for the alpine environment. Winter weather can also impact driving conditions, so make sure to check the daily road updates on our winter snow report and take note of any updates on the sign at the bottom of Ohakune Mountain Road. On days with road restrictions, use of a shuttle is recommended. Please take care while driving, and be aware of cyclists and hikers on the road.
Natural Hazards
Natural hazards that you could encounter at Tūroa include earthquakes, snow & ice, avalanche, rockfall, and severe weather. We do everything we can to reduce risks, but some hazards can't be fully predicted or prevented. During an emergency, please follow instructions from our staff.
Ski Area Infrastructure
Snow making and lift infrastructure, posts, fencing, plant and machinery do exist on and off the trails at Tūroa. We assess and manage hazards to keep you safe, but some risks remain. Please remain aware of your surroundings and watch out for hazards as you ski or ride. Please obey all signage, closures and instruction from Tūroa staff.


Mountain safety tips
Our top tips to stay safe, and have fun on the slopes:
Plan ahead: Check the weather forecast and snow report for road conditions and weather updates.
Be prepared: Pack essentials like snow chains, layers, waterproof gear, and sunscreen for unpredictable alpine weather.
Gear up: Wear helmets, body armour, and snow goggles, especially in terrain parks.
Kid safety: Give your little ones your phone number, just in case, and teach them about lift safety.
Ski with a buddy: Stick together and set a meeting spot in case you get separated.
Know your limits: If a run's too tough, side-step down carefully or ask for help.
Follow the signs: Obey posted signs and safety warnings around the mountain.
Watch the weather: Slow down or stop in poor visibility, and dress for the cold.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to combat altitude and wind.
Ski boot safety: Be careful walking in ski boots, especially on icy or slippery surfaces.

Approved alternative ski devices are permitted at Tūroa. Users of any alternative ski devices must adhere to the Snow Safety Code and follow instructions from staff. Devices must have leashes worn by the user. Toboggans and other sledding devices such as tubes are not permitted outside of our designated sledding area.
We strongly recommend everyone wear helmets for skiing or snowboarding. Under 12s are required to wear helmets in lessons. There are rentals and retail options available for helmets at Tūroa.
Age 3+. As our sightseeing is on the chairlift, children below 3 are not allowed to ride without skis. For safety reasons, we do not allow children in backpacks or slings to ride the chairlift.
