- Environment & Culture | Pure Turoa
ENVIRONMENT & CULTURE Our business model is anchored in strong environmental and cultural objectives. We have immense respect for Mt. Ruapehu and take our role as temporary custodians of a small space on this beautiful maunga very seriously. Our love of the maunga positively informs all of our operational decisions. We believe our environmental values and plans will deliver the most secure and sustainable long-term future for Tūroa snow sports. ENVIRONMENTAl A Smaller Footprint A continuous program to reduce infrastructure impact on the maunga. We commit to work with iwi, government and environmental experts to expedite the removal of redundant ski structures. Our goal is to reduce the total ski lift ground footprint by 40% within 10 years. This through the selective removal and upgrading of structures and implementation of new and more efficient technology. To Tread Lightly No more overcrowding and a higher value experience for our guests. Our goal is to reduce peak skier numbers lowering impact on roading, parking areas, pathways, and ski infrastructure loadings. We aspire to a highly efficient, lean and environmentally-focussed operation with reduced vehicle movements and a less active coverage area. A Changing Climate Investment in upgrading the base area to offer new and better year-round controlled experiences for sightseers. Investment in a state-of-the-art ‘snow factory’ machine located at the base area to produce snow in all conditions. This gives the local economy confidence in opening dates and continuous winter operation of the beginners area along with the opening of new ‘snow play’ areas. Our Environment Better management of electricity, diesel use, and a migration to alternative sustainable fuels. Investment in smarter snowmaking software technology lowering energy consumption and maximising snow production. Ongoing investment in new green tech, materials and consumables that are zero waste across all operations. Offering new sustainable transport options and reducing traffic congestion. CULTURAL Working closely with iwi, we aspire to develop Tūroa into an internationally-significant cultural experience where iwi stories are told and visually weaved into the ski area. We aim to have our visitors and staff leave their time on the maunga enriched with a better understanding of it's cultural significance
